converting 2 prong to 3 prong outlet? - help pls

i've looked around a bit using google, but I have yet to find any good information that makes me feel comfortable enough to try and convert my 2 prong outlets to 3 prong outlets.

since we have a savvy group here, I thought that I'd see what you all suggest.

thanks in advance

Would you kike to inform this "savvy" group exactly what in the heck you are attempting to do?

There are many different types of 2 and 3 prong cable plugs and their corresponding outlets...

A bit more indepth info will help greatly..

Question,

Do you have 2 strand or 3 strand(thick, generally a off white wire with 3 wires running through it usually called "romex") wiring for your receptacles?

If 2 - I strongly suggest you hire a pro.

If 3 wire you should be able to easily rewire the grounded receptacles to your house.

WARNING - IF you have ANY qualms about doing it yourself I think you should hire someone you trust to do the work. Work carefully and MAKE SURE the electricity is OFF before you work on a circuit!

yep, listen to no1vern. if you have two prong outlets in your house,it will require a complete rewiring job to convert to three prong outlets.

on the other hand,if you are just looking to convert the 2 prongers to three,i would go to any hardware store and purchase some adapters. the adapter has a two prong male on one side and a 3 prong female on the other.

give pickel a pm,he s our resident sparky

if your house only has 2 prongers,it must be a fairly old house. 3 prongers have been in use for close to 30 years,i think.

gulluk,eh?

How can you be so sure he is not talking about converting 2 prong 12 volt case fans to 3 prong?

I would agree that he is possibly talking about rewiring a 120 VAC house outlet..but surely people who ask for assistance would know how to specify exactly what they need and a little background info keeps everybody intouch with reality.

bovon - why don't you ease up. if you're going to be a jerk, do it in someone else's thread. stay out of mine.

thank you to the rest of you. I am speaking about 120 vac house outlets. clearly i dont' know what i'm doing here, so I'm sorry if I was a bit vague. i will go home this evening, turn off all the power, and open up the wall outlet to see if it has 3 wires and for some reason one of them just isn't attached.

once again, if any of you know of a good basics read on 120 vac wiring, then please suggest it!

thanks,
-Z

Is your whole house/apartment 2 prong non-grounded recepticals? Or just this one.

If its just this one then its very likely you could just swap out the receptical with a 3 prong (granted you know a little bit about electrical work), could prolly find a friend that can do this easily enough if not.

However if everything is 2 prong... then ya, although not the safest thing in the world the adapters should work.

I'll second that one! If you've -0- experience with house wiring, I'd strongly recommend having a knowledgable person right there to show you how & make sure it's correct.
