Local computer shop sees the light
These guys have been in buisness for 5-6 years, and they started out repairing networks, and ect. Finally they moved into building PCs,and finally into repairing other brands, other than what they sell.
A while back I went in trying to find a used video card, and the guy looks at me and says "We just pop the chipset off and toss them in the trash"
I thought how stupid, they could sell those good parts and make some extra cash, and help some ol boys out (namely me ).
So yesterday I went in to pick up a new mouse, and the same guy says " All I'm gonna have is a used one,if that's ok".
They even have buckets with nics, sound cards, video cards, modems, cables ect. for a buck.
3D 8meg video cards for 5 bucks. It was all I could do not to load up.
Then he tells me that he bought out a cooperate warehouse full of used stuff,to check back in a few days
ALL I can say is bout time. Now look at all the stuff you guys trashed
Better late than never I guess

Good find BC! I hate seeing parts go to waste like that...especially when there are plenty of us out there that could put them to good use.
Heck, I even shipped Mickwish some memory/cpu's for free, and he's WAY over there!
Granted, it took me a while to send them, but hey...it was free! |

We've got a similar store in St. Paul...picked up a cheap keyboard for 5 bucks, 2 SMC 1211tx NIC's for 5 a piece...lot's of stuff cheap. Hey, not everyone needs that 40 dollar keyboard...some of us are happy to wear out the last remaining keystrokes on an old board and buy another ( or pull out the spare ) when they eventually die.
Not to mention...lot cheaper to try and modify a mouse when it cost you a buck.

I'm glad to be able to buy some nice items at a reasonable price.
I have worn out many a used parts, and then again I built two "new" computers both of which are gone, and I'm still using my used 400
I couldn't understand why they would just pop off the chipset and dump 'em when they could get 5 bucks out of it. Made no sense to me

Do they dump the chipset or the remains of the card? Either way, what do they do with the part they save?

Let ya' guys in on a little secret!
Some of you know that when I get enough donated parts, I build a PC and then donate it to someone who needs it. Well, in the past, I've been know to use my own parts and money, when needed.
I found out that the Goodwill here was just throwing away anything that doesn't work or sell quick enough. The St Vincents in the other town was refusing computers, since they had no way of checking them out. So, I talked to both of them and the deal I worked out with Goodwill is that I take all or none (They let me know when they have a melon full.) They don't want anything donated back, so if it isn't working, or useable, I'm responsible for disposal. If it's working, I'm free to donate it or sell it. St Vincents on the other hand would like back anything they give me, if I get it working so that they can sell it. (I have no problem doing this for them. )
Once I start building up parts that I don't need or can't/won't use, I can sell, donate, or use myself. Most of it is older stuff, but some of it is nice! I'm still finding my biggest challenge is finding HDD's larger than 1GB, but i've only pick up 1 melon so far. (And yes, I did get an AMD K6-2 400MHz with AGP up and running [FAD] on a 1GB HDD, until I find a bigger HDD to put in it. Then I'll give it back to St Vincent's to sell. )
Check out the ones in your local area.
