U.S. - Baaad puppy.

According to actor Johnny Depp, the U.S. is like a "dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive,".

I don't suppose we'll see Mr. Depp at the Oscars anytime soon.

While some of his sentiments may contain a grain of truth, he comes across as severely hypocritical, as his success and status in life are due entirely to the U.S. being the way it is. For better or worse.

The Oscars are typically where you do see people like that making speeches: Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Gere, Michael Moore, Sasheen Littlefeather (stand-in for Marlon Brando) -- or was that before your time?

Not to defend/condemn what Depp may have said, but...

That's the point where celebrty-ness bites the big, greasy burrito.
You HAVE to do interviews, and so many of 'em, that one just blends into another. Sometimes they catch you on a day where you're just plain tired and cranky.

So you're talking away, the guy is asking all kinds of weird questions, and you let down your guard...

BAM! Next day, "So-and-so says____________!! "

And maybe you can't even remember saying it!
So you try to get the transcript, but now the interviewer, wary of lawsuits, says you have to talk to such-and-such lawyers. So you throw it over to your publicist, who is actually delighted at the "ink" you got, and issues some statement which nobody will hear, and people continue to give you dirty looks and drop dinner rolls into your soup at restaurants.

OTOH, I hear the $$$ is pretty good....

What's sad is the tremendous demand for celebs to constantly be interviewed. Who cares?

When I see actors convincingly portrait characters other than themselves on the screen or stage then they've earned my respect. I enjoy watching them do their job and I assume they enjoy doing their job. It works out best if we just leave it at that.

I don't want to know what Mr. Depp thinks about our foreign affairs or this years national budget. If I thought Mr. Depp had all the answers then I would have voted for him.

Since I live here in Californ-i-a, I think I'll make me a new bumper sticker and start sportin' around...

SHUT UP & ACT!

Double post. Don't know why it gives me the "too many connected users" error and posts my reply anyway.

The Brando affair wasn't before my time. And I agree the bozos living high off American culture tend to use the ceremony as a chance to pontificate against that same culture, but Depp claims he won't return to live in the U.S. until "the political climate changes". Maybe he only means until Bush is gone, who knows. But while criticizing the U.S. has become de rigeur for stars, those stars still live here. A star that refuses to live here will garner far more contempt from the masses, IMO.

If only in that he doesn't contribute to the tax base, at least. Wonder what the weather's like in Barbados, or wherever he is....

He hates the "political climate" but apparently the "cash climate" in the US is right up his alley.

Just like Alec Baldwin and Barbra Streisand threatening to leave the US if Bush was elected in 2000. I don't see a U-haul at their doors, do you?

Asking an actor or actress what they think of world affairs is ok.

Taking what they say serious is another thing.
