What is this? Is this a horsefly? They get really big around here. And this sucker is big. Doesn't look like a fly, though. Anyone have a clue?

That is a cicada.... when it gets dark you can hear them at night....

They're THICK here at work in center court.. can't see them but they're LOUD in large numbers

That was my next guess. It gets LOUD here at night. Annoyingly so. I figured it had to be a slew of some rather large beasts making all that racket.

Yup. they sit up in the trees making all that racket to attract mates.
You'd think they could find a quieter way of doing it.

well you get the picture, it is amazing what we do to attract the others, we can be just as annoying and stupid, but you are right, we generally aren't quite so loud
