large Iraqi paramilitary force

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Aug. 30 — Stung by Friday's deadly car bombing, American and Iraqi officials said today that they were discussing the possibility of forming a large Iraqi paramilitary force to help improve security in the country. NYT

I can't help feeling that our a** is gonna get bitten off again and creating militias in other countries has not served us well in the past.

The motive for the bombing as to destabilize the country. By creating this unit we have a cohesive response to what is sure to be revenge-full couple of months against our buddies, the Iranians.

You just can't have this many people standing around waiting for results.

I'd rather put them in uniforms and trucks and keep an eye on them, than let them start foaming into rioters. These people have lost the ability to do anything for themselves during Saddam's reign, and it will take time to re-learn those skills. The lawlessness created by other religious factions is targer number one.

All that is happening is that we are helping the Iraqis to help themselves. As time goes on, they will take on more, and more of the responsibilities of running their own country. We have to help them, and direct them, until they are ready to take of the training wheels.
Something overlooked by many people is the fact that nations are not built in a day, a month, or even a year. Iraq is starting from square one.
