My wifes Achilles Heel

AC has had foot problems for years (diabetes). But this time she has decided to follow a family tradition: Heel Spurs.

Thats when the little bone that forms the heel of your foot starts growing. An X-ray looks like (sort of, slightly) a cowboys spur.

But get this: They are painful! Just ask Babydingbat, she had to deal with these a coule of years back. At the time I thought that she was exagerating the pain. Later I got straightened out.

Anyway, while AC is in the other room enjoying a bout with her new (and improved!) pain killers I wrote this thread. I was hoping that some of you might have some words of encouragement for her, or at least sympothey.

PS: Yes my typos and spelling are getting worse. Blame it on Mozilla, they promised me a spellchecker, darn it.

Angelcat, sounds like your achilles heel is your achilles heel!! OUCH!!

Take two glasses of my favorite painkiller, Guinness, and post back in the morning.

Seriously, we all hope you're better real soon.

What is the connection between diabetes and the feet? I thought diabetes was a sugar storage problem.

Diabetes can affect the extremities in terms of blood flow to fingers and especially feet. People with Diabetes can have a hard go of it when it comes to their toes.

I'm wishing the best for our Angelcat! You tell her we said so, CE!

That's true. My mother had diabetes for years (and treated for it) and her toes on her left foot turned black. They had to be amputated. That was when she's in her mid 70s.

AC is not able (still enjoying her pain killers) to be here, but sends her best to all of you.

And from me, thank you for putting that smile on her face.

People have died from "a minor cut" to their foot or leg or arm when they have diabetes.

QUOTE:
How can diabetes hurt my feet?

High blood glucose from diabetes causes two problems that can hurt your feet:
Nerve damage. One problem is damage to nerves in your legs and feet. With damaged nerves, you might not feel pain, heat, or cold in your legs and feet. A sore or cut on your foot may get worse because you do not know it is there. This lack of feeling is caused by nerve damage, also called diabetic neuropathy (ne-ROP-uh-thee). It can lead to a large sore or infection.

Poor blood flow. The second problem happens when not enough blood flows to your legs and feet. Poor blood flow makes it hard for a sore or infection to heal. This problem is called peripheral (puh-RIF-uh-rul) vascular disease. Smoking when you have diabetes makes blood flow problems much worse.

These two problems can work together to cause a foot problem.

I lost my grandmother from a minor cut to the leg caused by a stick while she was walking down the sidewalk to get her newspaper. She had diabetes. The wound wouldn't heal and gange green set in and she lost her leg btk. She lost her will to go on after that.

Man, that was 25 years ago.

Get well AC!

Knot said it best. Hang in there, AC! My thoughts (for what little they're worth) are for you right now. Diabetes can be a "tough row to hoe."
