www.respectcopyrights.com commercial

i went to see the movie Uptown Girls, there was a "preview" or commercial or whatever you want to call it with a set painter.

he was just standing there in what seemed to be a workshop in a barn or something, leaning against a post, talking about what movies he had painted sets on. and he named a movie and said he had met his wife on that set.

so we are apparently supposed to feel this deep connection with him as a human being.

so then he says, i dont think that producers will be affected by piracy that much. it is the workers like us, i am just trying to make a living.

so any way, i wanted to yell in the theatre "BULL!" but held my tongue.

1. does that claim really have any merit? painters dont get royalties for every copy of a DVD sold do they? i would think they get a flate fee during the production, and arent seen again. is that right?

2. dont you think that he should feel a bit of resentment towards the producers? if infact he does lose money due to piracy, and he says that producers wont really be affected, then shouldnt he be upset that they arent getting a raw deal? just the way i see it.

i personally did not get anything out of the commercial, and maybe even think less of the industry for this attempt at making it look like we are hurting the little guys. why are they using the small guys as spokespersons?

DO NOT turn this into an attack on piracy, rather disect this commercial with me if you will. too many times i have started a thread like this and people either turn it on me, or just flip about piracy in general.

The problem is passing it around, not making legal backup copies for yourself and only for yourself

Bloody hell, it's £3.50 for an adult over here to see a movie.

Uh, £3.5 isn't that much. It's the amount movies used to cost 5 years ago.
Now regular fee per person is 10€. Which is almost double that of £3.5.

You're getting it cheap optimus. $16 is even more than 10€.

//edit: I just checked their site...
http://www.respectcopyrights.com/popup/why-3.html
<- is a load of ????... They're just trying to cause hysteria and shock people. Please, I understand the reasons for their campaign but these kinds of grounds just break it down.

//edit2: I continued to browse the site and 'inexpensive' caught my eye I guess the reality of those people is very twisted, the thing that happens to all rich people, the term (in)expensive becomes obscure. $10 is not cheap, or, $15 to buy a dvd isn't cheap either.
I checked the www.fandango.com site, or whatever that supposedly sells tickets to movies.
What on earth is the $1.5 service fee added per ticket?

Most software companies state in thier license agreement that it's allowable to make a single back-up copy of thier software to be used by you alone in the event that the original copy is unusable.
Quote:
COMMERCIAL software represents the majority of software purchased from software publishers, commercial computer stores, etc. When you buy software, you are actually acquiring a license to use it, not own it. You acquire the license from the company that owns the copyright. The conditions and restrictions of the license agreement vary from program to program and should be read carefully. In general, commercial software licenses stipulate that (1) the software is covered by copyright, (2) although one archival copy of the software can be made, the backup copy cannot be used except when the original package fails or is destroyed, (3) modifications to the software are not allowed, (4) decompiling (i.e. reverse engineering) of the program code is not allowed without the permission of the copyright holder, and (5) development of new works built upon the package (derivative works) is not allowed without the permission of the copyright holder.
Legal Use of Software
