Please can someone point me in the right direction to adding an Avatar to my profile?

Well first off, you need to make another 50 posts (or 10 news submissions, each news submission awards 5 posts).

Once you reach 51 posts you can upload a custom avatar.

Keep in mind that posts in IMO Community doesn't count.

Yep, you got it. Posts in IMO Community forum, Distributed Computing forum, and the Gallery don't count towards post count. All other forums do, but make sure you read the FAQs about what is allowed and what isn't.

So, onward and ask / answer those tech questions!!
