Why do people scream when the lights go out?

I was in school, and yesterday we were held 40 mins after becuase of a powerful storm with tornado warnings and stuff. Next thing we do is go into a lecture room and we wait for 30 minutes. What do you know, the lights all of a sudden go out. Once that happened, these boys sitting behind me start screaming like little girls for some reason. All the teachers came over and told them they were so immature.
This happens all the time in school, people screaming when lights go out, it must be an instinct or something...

...or tom foolery! Some people scream out of fear, some scream for fun in an attempt to put fear into others. Immature??? Well, depends on the age I guess. Sissies??? Definitely!!!

Some folks are scared of the dark and the sudden darkness gets them really scared! I was working with a really pretty administrative assistant on the day we lost power I swear, she almost bear hugged the life outta me when the lights when poof and I almost have most of the hearing back in my ear from her screams. But it was worth it Hahaha, she was really embarassed and I still tease her about it.

Another time I was at the mall with my gf and her mom. We were about 4 aisles over when the lights went out....all we heard was her mother screaming for us "AAAAAAAA!!! OMG WHERE ARE YOU GUYS?!?!?!?!!?" How embarassing.

The worst screaming I can ever recall was a girl who was petrified of spiders. (so scared of spiders she once jumoped for a moving car to avoid one ). A group of us were in a old outback cabin powered by petrol generator, at night, when she saw a huge huntsman spider on the ceiling. The generator chose that moment to go out. In the pitch blackness, her screams were so loud they were almost visible!

It only took about 5 minutes to get the generator back on again, but she screamed non-stop, hysterically for the whole time. She was a wreck for a few days after that, both physically and emotionally.

It was scary, in a way, to hear her scream like that, even though we knew the spider was harmless (BIG, but harmless).

If they are screaming out of real fear, you'll be able to tell, believe me.

Cheers
Mick
