That's beyond stupid. Where else but in Cali would you expect it.
A vet KIA is a vet KIA, period. There's no need to further identify them. They gave the ultimate sacrifice for us, they are all equally valued and respected.

Well, there actually is a reason: these are all people who would have been booted from the military with dishonorable (or other than honorable) discharges had their sexual orientation been discovered before they became dead heroes.
In other words, it is, as you so accurately perceive, a political statement.
The proliferation of special-purpose honors like this degrades the very idea. I thought the statues that were imposed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial were the first bad example of this kind, followed by the Vietnam Women's Memorial. And so on. What do you expect?
