Lightning hit

Yesterday, my house was hit by lightning.

My main computer is about the only computer still running, well rather almost the only electronic device still running.

We had no power, no water, the phones are toasted, some walls cracked with the impact, at some places you can follow the now unexisting electrical wires by the black burn left on the walls and roof.

It entered by the old TV antenna mast, destroying all TVs, VCRs and Satellite decoders on its way and jumping on every wire close enough. Also bringing down the alarm system and smoke detectors.

The surge protected powerbars are not designed to handle such a burst, as noted on their package when you buy them.

So on my personal list of broken stuff I got my secondary computer, my beloved little Linux router, the TV, VCR and Satellite decoder, heat control, the ethernet switch, the clock and my window's frame was dislodged many other things in the house are also broken, we haven't finished the inventory yet.

Only my main computer survived, it's the only one in the house equiped with a UPS, I suppose it absorbed the burst.

Although the monitor survived, it has scars. The colors and screen borders are messed because of the magnetic burst that came with the lightning.

I wasn't there when it hit, my parents felt really bad about a second before it hit then BOOOM, like a bomb they said, with sparks and fireworks. Had I been there, I would have been in my room, less than 15 feet from the mast's base.

By an incredible luck, it didn't end up in flames.

I'll be offline for a few days probably, until the mess is cleaned, house rewired and insurance dealt with.

See you later.

RIP electronics caught in the cross fire. Will your stuff be covered by any type of insurance?

OUCH!!

Insurance will help, but only up to a point.
No matter how much they will pay, It'll still cost you a lot in time, effort, and money to replace all your gear.

I wish you Good Luck, my friend.

Ouch. Pricey damage. Luckily your parents weren't hurt.

Might be time to install a lightning rod. Actually I guess it's past time, but just to make sure it don't happen again.

Wow! I'm sorry to hear of your losses, but at least everyone's OK.

Lightning doesn't strike twice. You can build it better than ever without worrying about that happening again.

Not true in the slightest. Lightning very often strikes the same points.

Sorry to hear Skuz
Its a bad deal glad everyone is alright, that's the main thing

I had that happen to me a couple of weeks ago, lost all but one computer, and the TV,nearly everything else electical was toast.
The house still smells funny, and some of the light switches don't work.

All the purple is gone from the TV now,so maybe the monitor will clear up also.

If anyone else lives in an area prone to such occurances let this be a lesson, damage prevention against lightning is pretty cheap these days---
air terminal is about 20$
cable a buck a foot
ground rod about 5$
