My Version:

Caldera(once a respected Linux company) bought up/merged with SCO and named the new company SCO Group. Then they summoned an evil demon that took over the management of the company. Pretty soon, SCO Group was a big cult of evil evil people who owned Unix. Then they started threatning other companies, and throwing lawsuits around...they pretty much say that Linux is a Unix copy with SCO-copyrighted code in it and that everyone should pay them alot of money.

Why did Microsoft contract with SCO to license involved technology?

Bruce Perens called the Microsoft license a “bribe… designed to intimidate Linux users”, and said “Microsoft is tying SCO’s allegations into its own anti-GPL campaign, a mostly unsuccessful effort to convince customers that … Linux [is] unhealthy for the market.” Oracle’s Larry Ellison said that Microsoft’s license was designed to hurt the open source movement, and called the lawsuit “extreme litigation.” (Kanellos & Fried)
