I'll essay an answer...

The term "Pulp Fiction" refers to a type of novel/magazine popular in the '30's and '40's which featured bizarre, grotesque stories, mostly science fiction and detective genres. They were printed on the cheapest newsprint, with color covers. Thus, "pulp".
By "Art house" is meant movies judged that they will never reach a huge audience, but will attract an 'esoteric' (artistic types) audience anyway.
Sometimes it backfires, though. Years ago, I did the poster for a film called "The Gods Must Be Crazy", a film by a South African director. The Art Director told me not to knock myself out, that it would only play the "art houses" (small theaters) for a week or two, then vanish.
It became quite a mainstream hit!
