Poll: Do chiropractors really help?

Hey all,

I've started going to a chiropractor and my friends are split about 50/50 about whether they actually help you or not.

My condition has improved significantly since I started going.

What do all of you think?

Sean

My dear ol mom has massive back problems and went to a chiropractor for a long time. It seems to have helped her tremendously.

As for me I was once in a fairly mild bike accident....compounded onto the fact that I stupidly bounced around alot that night...on a trampoline....

Had a very, very, very sore and tight neck for 2 days. Went to a chiropractor and after a few days of treatment it was okay again.

I have a friend who swears by them. He goes on a regular basis.

I plan on going someday but I'm too lazy to book an appointment.

A guy at my gym is a chiropractor. After I tweaked my shoulder doing some weight work one morning, he adjusted something back there and by the end of the day the pain was gone. *cra-a-a-ack* hehe

It was one of those .. "you know it's gonna be a painful 2-4 days" type of tweak.. y'know?

So I vote: Yes [if performed correctly].

I say "yes" for the treament of occasional aches and pains.

However, extended duration pain needs more qualified treatment IMHO, plus one has to consider the implications of potential damage incurred through long-term usage of chiropratic techniques upon the same joint(s).

I was born with an extra vertebra. It's 2.5 inches thick, and permanently fused to my pelvic bone. When I started getting taller around the age of 13-14, something happened back there and I could no longer bend over very far and had trouble getting in and out of chairs. It was painful.

It was either go to a doctor and let them fix me with a knife or go to the chiropractor and let him work his magic. It took about a year, but my back has had no trouble since then.

So yes, they work.

edit : it's been about 12 years, no problems.

Like I said, I've started going in July and it has helped me a lot. I could barely walk because of pain shooting through my right leg and occasionally I had back muscle spasms.

I had fallen down a flight of stairs a few years ago and was in a minor car accident on a highway 2 years ago.

My job involved and still does involve moving PCs, monitors, etc... I did that fine for after both those incidents until early this year I was out of commission for about a week in bed. Due to back pain so bad I could barely walk from my bed to the washroom. Went to the doctor and did physical therapy, that didn't help.

My manager recommended the chiropractor her and her husband go to. I went and I'm well on my way to recovery. I still have some small pain but otherwise I'm a lot better.

My friend says it helped his mother out greatly. She was in a car accident and without chiropractic care she wouldn't be walking or doing much else now.

Of course... doctors do not recognize anybody other than their profession helping others. (and dang few of those)

I voted yes!!...and I would do it 100 times if it would help someone else to go try one. Not just one, either. They specialize the same way doctors do, and sometimes you just need to find the right one. The one thing I find that is missing in their practice is, if they see a problem that some other chiropractor would know how to correct, they do not send you to another chiropractor. The analogy is this..if you go to a doctor with a pain in your head, he will send you to a specialist for 'head pains' etc. Chiropractors do not, that I am aware of.

I fell in the military in the early 50s...hurt my back, and from then on until I was discharged, I was in pain..the military doctors wanted to do 'exploratory surgery'..... I was hurting..not stupid as he**.

I began seeing first one then another chiropractor..they all helped, but never corrected the problem. Finally, in 1965 I wound up with a new one, fresh out of school...he had specialized in what is known as the 'Grostic method'.. I think the name comes from some chiropractor who perfected it..it deals with the 'floating' bone at the base of the skull, between the neck bone and the base of the skull...mine was all out of alignment. He put it back inplace...and after about 20 - 30 trips over two years, I was "cured". I have never had back pain again.

Do I believe in chiropractors?... you can bet your sweet butt I do!
