Unless you have been subjected to forces causing joint/nerve damage, I would say you simply have a pinched nerve, likely in the cervical region of your neck.

If heat did little to offset the pain, try alternating it with cold. Ice will work better for a pinched nerve, as it will dull the pain.

If the problem persists, I recommend seeking a chiropracter for a realignment of the problem area, thus relieving stress upon the nerve.

well it's not the joint, because the pain is somewhere between the neck and the shoulder, hard to explain, well it could be a muscle!

Heat will usually dull the pain if it is a muscle, unless you severely stretched (or tore) the muscle in question. Still, an inpingement upon a nerve can create the symptoms you describe.

Here is the bad news..... a pinched nerve can come and go for years plus have ever changing pain levels. Try resting for awhile with cold applied to the area, especially upon the neck.

Honestly, you may need a x-ray to examine the bone structure to ultimately determine the source of the problem.

Did it start right after you woke up or a few hours later?

You could try to take a few allergy pills (Benadryl) that cause drowsy ness. No more than the recommended dose but that could help you get to sleep. You ski right? Have you ever had any major injuries in that area? Wait and see what it does in the next few days.

A chiro could help if you just slept outta whack, Creatures. Every so often I wake up tweaked out and the pain will lessen during and subside in 2-4 days.

Or you could see a chiropractor - see the new thread about chiropractors - he could untweak you

Hope you feel better.
