so kids are moving back into their dorms, and when they have problems (notice "when" not "if") they call me.

so a mother calls in....

mother: hi, i want to know if you sell the adapter we need for my daughter to use her electrical appliances in the dorms.
me (confused): umm, what kind of adapter are you looking for?
mother: well it seems like all the outlets in tower C are made for the 3 prong connectors, and her 2 prong appliances won't fit.
me (even more confused): ummm, tower c should be no different then any other dorm, or even any outlet. i am not sure what kind of connection you have, you arent from europe are you? well, either way, we dont sell any electrical adapters, you may need to go to radio shack if you need one.
mother: no, we are from ohio, so you think that i should just go to radio shack and see if they have what i need?
me(hesitant to insult her inteligence): umm...have you tried to turn the plug upside down and fit it in the outlet?
mother: THAT'S it! huh! wonder why it fits upside down??? well, thank you!

upon thinking about it long and hard....OLD SCHOOL (circa 1920) outlets didnt have a ground, just the 2 prongs. they must have an old house.

i have a couple good ones...

students get an ugly beige wall phone in their dorms by default. a student called in and asked if he could hook up his portable one he brought from home....also in the dorms, there is an old modem line that doesnt work anymore. so ofcourse that didnt work.

student: my phone isnt working.
me(seeing his caller ID): umm....how are you talking to me?
student: i am using the other phone
me(other???): umm, are you using both phone ports on your wall?
student: yes
me: ahh, well the one closest to the wall you won't be able to use, that is an old modem line. but if you want to hook up your phone you brought frm home, you can do that still, you just need to get rid of the wall phone that is there.
student: it is stuck on the wall
me: yeah, you have to lift and slide it up, and it should come right off
student: you mean<click>

i just had a lady that said he computer wouldnt shut down. it had an error message on the screen about a service not starting. i told her to hold in the power button on the computer until it turns off, and then restart. a few seconds later she said that when she turned it back on the error was still there....i asked her if she had turned off the monitor or the actual computer. she said she just turned off the monitor....mathmatics faculty
