Write a quick letter to the writer, copyright holder, and anyone else you can get ahold of. Authors of many of those short independent films are often ecstatic to give permission for distribution.

i second that siliconjon. Don Hertzfeld i'm sure would love to get his film around some more.
A friend of mine actually came to me a few months ago saying "we have found the most amazing little short film that you HAVE to see" and so i first saw this a while ago...it's a really good short film.
