Bicycle Brake Question

hey guys. i just bought a new bicycle for use at school, its been like 10 years since ive owned one. my brakes screech really loud when i use them and i was wondering what i could do to make them stop. any ideas?

You may need to adjust your brake pads so that they are aligned just right with the rims. The brake pads may need to be replaced if they are too hard (like an old eraser). Rims may need a cleaning. The rims may not be true (rounded all the way around) or the brake pads may just need to wear and "break" in.

depends on the brake system.

Are they old-school (think horse shoe). or linear pull (two arms with cable between them)?

Adjust the pads so that they do not sit flush on the rim. You want the leading edge of the pad to contact first.
