I guess I'm qualified to answer this.
To name a few:
San Diego Zoo - Balboa Park (zoo - take the tram ride)
Wild Animal Park
Downtown Gaslamp District
Old Town
Mission Bay
La Jolla and La Jolla Shores
Coronado is one of the nicest beaches in the world. However, if you want a "California" beach I suggest you check out Pacific Beach or Mission Beach. They're contiguous BTW. I never quite know where one ends and the other begins. Well worth renting bikes and traveling the boardwalk. You'll understand why we have so many nut cases running for Governor.
Food:
You must try a Rubios fish taco if only to say you've had one. They're quite good.
La Jolla:
Alfonsos of La Jolla Mexican restaurant - great food and without a doubt the best Margaritas in San Diego. You may want to consider a side order of "designated driver" with those!
Old Town: full of restaurants - a little touristy (actually a lot) My favorites are
Casa De Pico and
Old Town Mexican Café
Pacific Beach:
World Famous You can eat right at the edge of the boardwalk and watch the sunset. Depending on your dining tastes mod to pricey. You can get out reasonably though.
Gaslamp : Chalk full of restaurants! S.D.'s nite spot. Cheap
Old Spaghetti Factory and
Anthony's Fish Grotto Anthony's is on the water front just south of the Gaslamp a few blocks away.
I assume you are renting a car. It's easy to get around on the freeways. Of all the places, Wild Animal Park is the only trek.
Like baseball? The Padres are in town. While there is a raging debate as to whether they are a professional baseball team, the stadium, in Mission Valley, is probably about 20 minutes from Coronado. It's a fun evening. Most people "tail gate" in the lot before going in the stadium. You might want to pick up something from
Pat and Oscar's
Also in Mission Valley are
Bully's East (my PERSONAL Favorite!!) and
Seau's The Restaurant
Need anything else let me know.
Oh, before I forget:
Stay out of Mexico!!!!!!!!
