oh yes...an age old question
homer: i have a question. could jesus microwave a burrito so hot that not even he himself could eat it?
flanders: well gee, thats a real melon tickler of a question there homer, and i don't know the answer. but luckily i have a book which does <holds up bible>.
homer: it's pretty long, could you read it to me?
ned: <glee on face> could i?!!
Here's a thought about those questions: it obviously plays on the omnipotence part of God. But in reality most people don't
truly believe God is omnipotent, they only think they do. Assuming God is omnipotent, then EVERYTHING that happens ever in the world is EXACTLY what God wants to happen (including things like the holocaust and war in general). This also means that freewill is pretty much BS and predestination is a fact. Granted we might be the ones that actually make a decision, but God made us in such a way that he essentially programmed us to do exactly what we do. Afterall, if he can do anything then he could see exactly how the combination of all atoms and molecules would interact for all eternity. From a more specific standpoint God WANTED Adam and Eve to sin against him and he WANTED them to get thrown out of the garden, and for that matter he WANTS us to sin everytime we do.
Of course all of that is theoretically possible...but when you throw in a couple of other facts about God the picture doesn't become so clear, namely that God is wholly good (will never do anything evil) and that he is omniscient (not only does he know everything going on, he knows what is right, i.e. he doesn't make mistakes).
EDIT: my personal views are more like tmx468's views. i don't believe that the bible is word for word accurate, but really meant more to guide us and help us, not dictate how we should live or lives.
