Chernobyl death toll

http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentSe...ExpIgnore=true

Interesting. I was surprised at the numbers and actually how low they are.

junk science?

http://www.cnn.com/2001/WORLD/europe...ine.chernobyl/
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/722533.stm
http://www.abc.net.au/news/science/e...25145050_1.htm

and the authority on the matter. If you have time read through the 115 page pdf file on the matter. http://www.unscear.org/pdffiles/annexj.pdf That is the document on which the statistical analysis was based.

Not an easy # to pin down by any means. Based on my knowledge of the matter, that number seems slightly low. Perhaps it is because it is only evaluating deaths due to thyroid cancer.

I have been unable to find the particular paper on the web (I would like to read it myself)... but I am surprised that a site such as "junk science" would link to an article the references a grad student’s thesis paper that has yet to be evaluated by the scientific community. Then again, maybe I am not too surprised at all =)

Knew a girl once who lived in Georgia. She was a little kid during Chernobyl, had a profound effect on her life. They had to throw away something like 3/4 of the food in that part of the USSR. Scary stuff.

There is no official death toll, and it would be inaccurate anyway. Many people died indirectly from birth defects, stillbirth, contaminated food, and lack of food.

There were only 80 (I think) that died in the blast. Over 200,000 died in the cleanup and in the surrounding towns as a direct result of radiation.

Good point. Kind of like in Japan after the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings; most numbers will only show the numbers that initially died in the blast, anything else has a good chance of being inaccurate.

By sheer bad luck I happened to be in Inverness (N.Scotland) visiting a buddy when the radioactive cloud went over.
The local gov let us know when we should stay indoors and how long for.
We could not get milk until the rain washed the isotopes into the soil and lots of sheep had to be destroyed. A fine example of Commie, engineering ! we should sue them for hospital costs (if they had any money)

well it's not just the russians that had problems with nuclear accidents...remember 3 mile island

edit: to clarify, 3 mile island was not a catastrophe as chernobyl was, but it showed that there was at least a chance of a similar accident happening in the US
