Quote: "She was a very important bird," said Jan Hember, a volunteer with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Santa Barbara. "There were thousands of hours put into saving this bird. It's a joke to say she was only worth $179,000."

Id say he got off EASY!

"Lewis also was sentenced to 36 months probation and ordered to pay $180 to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for killing a common white-tailed deer in Illinois in 2001."

Hmm 36months in 2001 ? wouldn't the shooting of condor be a violation of that?

He would have got a lot less if he was a Fresno Crips and killed a rival!

Killing a buzzard?

I am wondering if there is any other wildlife in the area that looks similar or if there were precautions in place to educate hunters on identifying the birds.

If there is no mandatory education (even a pamphlet given out to al licensees), then I say he got the shaft big time. If he knew what he was doing when he did it, then the fine is only then excessive IMO.

I disagree with ya' on this one Dave. This is what gives hunting a bad name!

Standard rules of thumb when hunting, is to know what you are shooting (type of weapon), where you are shooting, and WHAT (type of game) you are shooting!!

In this case, he didn't know WHAT he was shooting (Condor), and probably didn't know where he was shooting as well.

I think he is in violation of his previous probation with this conviction and should be extradited to be resentenced.
