$100 got me a '71 Impala 350 cuin 2 bbl, TH350, 112k on the clock... got 4k miles out of it before it spun a rod bearing, hauling 7 people up a big hill on bad oil and running 4 recapped BIAS ply snowtires in July!!! I had used an old reflective real estate sign to patch the rust on the rear quarters.... I could find that car in any parking lot with just a flashlight.

Ha! I had one that I used coffee can lids to patch the floor on the drivers side.. Cold slushy snow coming up was a drag.

I can't believe peeps had such powerful cars as first cars.

The insurance would laugh at you if a 17 / 18 y.o wanted to insure something with a 5+ litre engine. You wouldn't even get offered a quote.

Most start off on something like a 1.2-1.4L and a cheap car @ that. Even then it costs young drivers usually around £1000 / yr to insure their car. Usually, it's not what you do to your car: it's what you hit!

This is made worse by all these companies that encourage everyone to sue eachother: the money's got to come from somewhere, of course!

My first was a Vauxhall Astra (Opel Kadett) 1.6SR. Quick enough, fairly economical, practical (hatchback) and one of the singularly most simple cars to steal.

Yep, you guessed its' demise

'79 Datsun 210. It was a four door with 70's green exterior and nasty tan interior. It was a four speed that would shimmie at 45 so no speeding here. It was demolished by a man that was high fleeing from the cops, but hey atleast the cops finally caught him.

Wow...nothing like a fine ol' Mopar as a first car. Not that either of us would know, since "fine" is probably a stretch.

My first- 74 Plymouth Satellite - Tan with a Black Roadrunner hood, huge hole in the top of the front passenger fender (where a retread blew through), rusted trunk.

I bought the beast for only $300. At the time I also owned a $450 bicycle....LOL.

Satellite Highlights:

1) Smelling like I'd been running a chainsaw after driving it cause it burned so much oil and had bad exhaust.

2) Hitting the point of resonance. The car had no working speedometer, so I have no idea how fast I was going when I hit the point of resonance. At somewhere over 100mph, the whole car would make a really loud humming/ringing resonating sound. It was caused by air rushing into the rust holes in the trunk I think.

3) Crusing with my friends at the local place to cruse, punching the gas while rounding a corner and watching trash shoot out of the rust holes in the trunk. They all hit the floor in shame.

4) Drag Racing a 4 cyl Mazda 323 and getting whooped.

5) Having a girl ask "will we be taking your car?" and declining to go out when I said yes. She then agreed when I borrowed my Mom's Merkur.

6) Getting pulled over by 4 cops, who spent a long time trying to come up with some way to ticket me for having an ugly, rusty, smelling car. They failed.

7) taking the snow tires off the back and putting them on the front cause it was chewing up tires too fast. Anyone ever try steering a 2 ton+ car with manual steering and big knobby snow tires on the front? It did help with the tire situation.

8) Seeing that old beast on the road for years after I got rid of it. I'll bet she's still out there somewhere.
