Why, again, are you trying to profit from a free, open source distribution?

$6 for 27 CD's is not what I would call profit. And if it goes higher, great! Cuz I have $300 worth the college books to buy in two weeks. And it's legal, so what is your gripe?
There are quite a few people out there who have dial-up who would love to get a good price on several Linux OS's. There are many sites that offer them for $2+ per CD! I think that is too much. So again, what was your gripe?

Not really the point here.
I'm not disagreeing that it's a decent deal, if you haven't got a broadband connection, only with the principle of the sale.

Its no biggie, you play in their sand pit, you follow their rules and policies. At least they have the decency to credit your fees.

Funny Whir ........
Redhat sells it......
Suse sells it...
Mandrake sells it....
Many websites sell it...
IBM profits from it....
Why SHOULDN'T SiliconJon try and make a buck ???? It IS LEGAL and personally I see absolutely NOTHING wrong with it. Like he said, alot of folks still have dialup ....
----------------------
IMHO ....... SCO probably sent ebay some cease and desist letter that ebay crumbled under. Or M$ ....... as they watch ebay like hawks....... just try selling any M$ product on ebay. Yeah right. It wouldn't suprise me at all to learn M$ was a bug in ebay's ear......
What a bunch of crap. Sorry to hear of your troubles with ebay. Keep sending them emails ...... maybe they will get a clue.....
I noticed that a search for Linux CDR returns ZERO results....

Hey, believe what you want, do what you want. You don't have to agree with me.
On the other hand, RedHat sells RedHat, no Suse, or Mandrake, or Debian... Etc.
If you think that having a high bandwidth connection entitles you to sell other people's work to make a profit, that's great. Not sure what happened to moral standing, but each to his own, right?

To each his own..... I agree. But the GPL GIVES everyone the right to distribute....
AND redhat, mandrake, debian ... are basically just selling FREE products themselves.... They didn't develop the gimp, mozilla, or most of the other apps the distribute on those same cd's ....... only an install script for the most part....
So ......... in essence REDHAT and MANDRAKE are the ones making money off the hard work of coders who have donated countless hours to the project. Why exactley should Mandrake, Redhat, and others be the only ones to be allowed to profit ???
So no, I personally don't find anything wrong with it....... neither does Mandrakesoft, RedHat, etc ....... but that's just my opinion..... and Linus's , and FSF .

RedHat sells the manuals that come with the distro, not the distro, and not the GPL apps.
And you're quite right, the GPL does give everyone the right to distribute. However, I don't recall anything about profit from when I read the GPL, except how you're not allowed to.
You're sort of seeing this from a "How can anything possibly be wrong with Linux and how people choose to use/distribute it" which simply isn't realistic.
I'd be more than willing to bet that Linus doesn't support selling off home burnt distros. It goes against the whole idea of open source.
When I make copies of the distros I've downloaded for people I tell them, "Bring me a disc." That's the idea behind open source.
