wasnt the link in that thread with that crazy tattoo maker who made something totally differnt as the customer wanted? like she wanted the word love... and get something like prostitute?

or was that at a different board

I am a martial arts instructor...It's my career. I'm not asian and I don't feel that it matters. And if we all worried about what things are going to be, or look, like when we are all old and wrinkled our lives would be pretty pathetic in my opinion.

The characters that I want as a tattoo aren't just to "look cool" like craigk said. If that were the case I wouldn't care what the character meant as long as it "looked cool".

to me it wouldn't be disrespectful. Remember guys that America is the mix of all race and colors. So that Japanese would be as American as the next guy.

Not a bit. I would feel proud that someone of a different ethnic background is taking pride in his/our country.

for just those basic words you can do as suggested and hit the library or even d/l the language and type it in and then go double check. When you need to watch out is when you are adding more than one word or using something complex cause then the symbols added together often don't mean what you think they do, as English to Japanese is not an exact translation.

As for it being disrespectful thats all matter of opinion. I have several Korean, Japanese and Filipino friends and family and some think it is and others don't. It would be more disrespectful if you did it wrong than to ask for help from someone that knows and do it right.
