Metal container in the fridge

I remember as a kid, we used to have a metal pitcher that we had Kool-Aid in that was always in the refrigerator.

In the back of my head, I remeber hearing something or recall reading that your not supposed to do that anymore.

Anybody else heard of this and why your not supposed to?

Same with metal in the freezer ???

Ever heard of the "tounge to a metal light pole* trick, that is the only reason I can think of. I have used the metal ice cube trays and they can rip a layer of skin from your finger when used in the freezer, but I can't come up with a reason why the fridge would be bad...

Hmm, all I could find was "When a product containing citric acid is stored in a metal container, the product may take on a metallic taste." from Country Time lemonade.

I'm still digging.

EDIT - Looks like it's galvanized metal.

So, why does FCOJ come in tubes with metal ends? And what about lemonade in a can?

Perhaps if there is metal in the liquid there could be some sort of chemical reaction, like when you touch some foreign metal to a filling in your mouth?

Now I'm interested, too...

I'm thinking it has something to do with getting metal, namely heavy metals (Lead, Silver, Mercury. etc) into your system where it can do harm.

My mom (an RN) told me not to put meats in a metal container and refrigerate them. Don't recall exact reason, but had something to do with a reaction between the meat and the metal.

And I can tell you from experience don't open up a can of juice (any kind) with the hole puncher thingy doogle and refrigerate it in the can. In two days you have juice that tastes like dirty water from one of those water fountains that make the water taste like blood...

Yep, that's the problem. Leaching of heavy metals.

I recall an incident they told us about in a public health class I did about an "outbreak" of sickness in a family. They thought it was a new disease being spread in the family, until they found the metal jug with orange juice in it, and tested the family for lead poisoning. Sure enough, the acid in the juice was reacting with the coating of the jug and leaching lead into the juice.

That's what I've heard about metal containersw, anyhow.

Cheers
Mick

Yeah, but I think it has been quite some time since they have been using lead based anything for food storage... at least one hopes anyway

Ceramic jugs can also have this problem, if they have lead-based paint or coating on them.

Some ceramics manufacturers still use lead-based paints, belivee it or not.

Cheers
