Women in Iraq being attacked/raped
Coalition Needs to Do Better Job Protecting Women in Iraq
Unfortunately Its seen as bringing shame on the victims families.
Quote: But at Human Rights Watch, Hania Mufti ... said the reason is that in Iraq, as in many cultures, the attacks are seen as bringing shame on the woman's family.

Isn't it true in the Muslim culture the women have no standing? This is a cultural issue. Who are we to try to critize such an old and nobel religion? If they don't like the rules, why don't they convert to western religions? Oh, I forgot. They can be killed for that, also. We are already in trouble for not respecting "cultural customs". Like putting your foot on a prisoner's head to hold him down when a rifle - butt to the head would be preferable and more manly. Who would have thunk it?.
BTW: how come only men have AK 47's all over the place? Why can't the gals hide them under their robes and take these dudes out? My guess is women are not allowed to own or carry guns or defend themselves against men.

Hi dana,
In the article it says that the women are blamed and that they(the victims) bring shame on the victims family. That is why most of these incidents arent reported to the authorities.

Dana, I think hardly anything is being reported right now in Iraq since they do not have a functioning government. They don't even have enough working police stations yet.

CM,
Why is being raped considered as shaming the family in arab culture? I would think that the shame would lie directly on rapist not the rapee. I could possibly see if the woman was flaunting it and was raped (not that I agree with that either but I could see it) because she was shaming herself by flaunting.
This along with marriage laws as well as work laws makes me think that islam is fundimentally flawed with regard to women. It consistantly is interpereted by the faithful to consider women as lower in rank (or is misinterpereted to make women lower class citizens). I know you can find plenty of links to show how understanding islam is toward women but basically, the "not without my daughter" syndrome seems to be alive and well (where the man is the king and dictator of his castle)
