Been a long time since we had any 389s in the shop. They are awesome motors. Nowaday we're building chevys mostly but still take in other motors for rebuild jobs. Tarp2, we have motors that will take on your 389, a 383 (350 with a 400 crank and a .30 overbore.)
I had a 67 firebird convertible with a 326. That is a strong running engine, even with a 2bbl.
I think a '69 Grand Prix is in order here. I believe there was a 429 4 spd option that year. That would make installing a manual trans that much easier.
It's strange the original owner would order a GTO with a 3 speed. I didn't know they made them that way. Most people got a four speed. The '65 was my brother's first car!

The 326 is another classic motor. They're very strong small blocks. I had a '65 pont tempest with that motor. With two barrels and single exhaust it was rated 250 horses. Also had a two speed turbo 300 transmission. I charged all that to four barrels, dual exhaust, and three speed turbo 350 with a shift kit. I have no idea what horses I got but it sure run.
RayH, my sis had a '67 gto. It had a three speed hurst shifter factory installed.

You are right, You could not order the car with a 3 speed that I know of. Not with overdrive either.
