New Jersey bans drowsy driving

form CNN " bill signed by Gov. James E. McGreevey allows prosecutors to charge a sleep-deprived driver with vehicular homicide, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. "

But hey it's ok to work medical residents long hours and then say go home and come back in 4 hours to work again.....
( i know they passed new laws in NJ but they still are not great) but i guess the medical residents have lots of money so patients can just sue them and the hospitals when accidents happen

(now I am not against the drowsy driving law by no means)

I'm against it just because it seems to be a wild card. Prove it. now does the fact that you kid kept you up till one mean you don't go to work. that is not 24 hours with out sleep is it. Just stayed up an extra hour, should that now be the requirement. I am not sure I understand how you can fairly push something like this.

I guess if you were tired enough to crash there is some evidence you over did it. But I am just afraid that this is a tremendously vague law.

Interesting law. What are the bases for the charges if you DON'T get into an accident. Like are cops allowed to just pull you over for driving while sleepy? Or is this another one of those "It's not illegal until you do something else wrong but then we are going to beat the living **** out of you in court"?? I'm kind of confused.

Vaga you got a link to this article?

My problem is when I get tired on long drives.. you STILL have to drive to get to the next rest area
Sometimes that alone takes long enough for ya to get into bad shape..

And how exactly are they going to measure this? I mean, if you can't quantify it, its going to be awfully hard to prosecute isn't it?

I understand the intent in creating the law, to keep dangerously sleepy drivers off the road, but I see lawyers of all kinds having a field day with this.
