You don't know what we did...

And I ain't going to not tell you!!!

Yes, I am in a good mood.

I finally got rid of IE from our systems (sort of, read on) and replaced it with Mozilla.

Along the way, I revamped our security, made unneeded several utilities and programs, and just plain had fun.

And, finally, just this morning, I got our network fully up and running, without compromising our secutrity, or having to re-route the entire thing.

Man I'm on a roll!

Now for the details:

Internet Explorer has been a mainstay for me, mostly due to the fact that I work as a tech on home systems. As such I need to understand the users problems and fixes. HOWEVER there is a problem between IE and Zone Alarm (my firewall). It seems that some security sites can cause ZA and IE to argue. This results in IE going "POP" and may cause ZA to reset (or not, try reading up on this, its confusing).

The only FIX for this that IE has is to uninstall ZA and go with just the included firewall from WinXP. Since that firewall is swiss cheese, I passed on that and went looking for the answer elsewhere.

Internet searches became needed, since ZA tech has a glich in its search function. Here I found several links to ZA, but it was a link to a Mozilla fan site that got my attention. I backtracked, and tried a new search. And bingo, guess what? ZA ain't the only one that has a problem with IE and security.

Sooo... If IE won't fix the problem, and changing the firewall won't fix the problem...

Enter the search for a better browser. By this time I have now invested some three days of my time over a period of some two weeks plus. I was like a coffee junkie on decaf, at three am saturday morning. When a ray of light shown thru the clouds.

MOZILLA. The browser that I have used regularly in LINUX. Duh... Just have to remember to keep going back and checking for fixes and problems with IE. (Just about every hour on the hour ) Note: I can't wait for the end of August; Mozilla will have a spell checker! (I NEED one)

On the security front I have just finished re-configuring all of the security setting in windows, as well as tweaking the firewalls, AVG, Spybot... (Get SpyBot, and run the IMMUNIZE, espesially the recent update, it is great).

I unfortunately set the security so well that the network started shooting back.

Soo... I had a night of horror trying to fix this last night. Without removing the security settings, removing the firewall, or living without. My bald spot was gaining ground all night. Then came a kitten. Right up on my keyboard. The one that looks like he needs to grow into his fur. Like that user icon...

After I recovered from the brain storm (why storm? Why not brain festival?) I tried it. It WORKED!!!

I had SECURITY, FIREWALL, and NETWORK all at the same time!

I AM INVINCABLE!!! (/ducks)

The secret was in the users, and the user groups. I am still working on whether there is a better way to set this up, so I am not going into all the details here. Maybe later.

Thanx for your time.

(The typos here are all my fault, and I ain't going to fix 'em) The typo king

I moved to Mozilla when the copy of IE on my system wouldn't go to a bunch of SSL sites. I've loved it since then, but lately I've had the problem that Mozilla won't download ANYTHING (even pictures that I right click on and say save image). The worst thing is that it's a known issue and they have yet to fix it.. For me, not being able to download stuff is a definite showstopping bug..

I moved from IE to Mozilla and I LOVED IT!! But then the little quirks of Mozilla started to bug me, especially the LOOOOOOOONG start up time. Even with the Mozilla start agent or whatever it's called running.

I moved to Opera and have no issues with it so far. Except I have to use IE to check my work e-mail (we use Exchange webmail) because the encryption setup only works with IE (huge shock eh?). Otherwise Opera is working great for me, I use it for e-mail as well, does the job for me.

I am a die-hard IE user, never had a slight problem with it myself. But, since I kept hearing about it, I tried Opera and I have to say I like it. It has a very nice feel to it and alot of very nice features.

BUT, it has some pretty big problems to overcome before it will be able to replace IE for me. They have to work out the java problems, half the pages I goto are missing half the images. Apparently if they use java for them its a problem.

Mozilla still feels very "amateur" or home grown. Just not very polished or finished.

You lost me a bit near the end

Can you clarify?

Well, hate to say t CE, but you missed a very easy solution.

Ditch ZA and use Sygate Personal Firewall.

No hassles with IE ever, and easy to config that ZA, IMO.

Or, if you're really serious about firewalls, build an IPCop box. Much, much more robust than any windows firewall!

Seriously, though, glad you found a solution. Browser crashes suck bigtime.

Cheers
Mick
