Just finished Newt Gingrich's
Gettysburg. I must admit, I was expecting a pro-south attitude throughout and was fully prepared for a tough read, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's actually a great book and I highly recommend it to any Civil War buff. It's an alternate history novel. It follows the actual history of Gettysburg to the end of the first day of battle. From then on it postulates an alternate CSA course of action. I won't spoil it, but it certainly makes the reader see how things could have turned out very different.
Co-written with William R. Forstchen, the book is a real page turner. Aside from some sloppy editing and a few glaring grammatical flaws, it's a first rate book. The promo packet claims it "stands beside
THE KILLER ANGELS" as historical fiction. That's stretching it more than a little. But that's not to say it isn't a good read in its own right. Very, very few novels are on a par with Michael Shaara's masterpiece. Only his son has come close as far as I've read. Still,
Gettysburg makes a fine addition to any Civil War buff's collection.
Well done, Newt.
