Car question for the mechanics

Yesterday my neons check engine light came on so i took it to firestone. Ran the diagnositics and came up with an evaporator error code?

so here i am dont know nothing about cars, and they said i have to take it to the dealership. I hate taking it to the dealership cause they love to charge you and an arm and a leg. Is this evaporator error gonna cost me or something simple to fix?

99 dodge neon r/t, 63,012 miles

The evaporator is a part of your air conditioning system. Any AC work is going to cost you, sorry to say. You MAY have to go to the dealer for repair because of the age of your car but I'd check with some AC technicians for info.

Auto Zone will check out your computer problems for FREE, at least , here in Jackson. They want to sell ypu some parts .
If the A/C is working properly ,I would pull off the negative battery terminal to reset the computer and see what happens. Will have to reset radio stations Hope this helps Ed

Wait about a minute before hooking back up to clear the code

Same here. If you ever want the check-engine light checked, take it there. $80 for this diagnostic is a rip-off.

The dealership is going to be the place where this work will cost you the most money. There are plenty of shops that will work on AC or any part of a 99 Neon, for that matter. I wouldn't take it to the dealership unless it was under warranty.

Gomer led me to this site and it is a great help. Just put in 1999 ?Neon and the site will bring up the 4 different models for you to choose from.

There are 4 models of that year's Neon and the manuals are online. You can search for the error and see if it is hard to fix yourself.

well i picked the car up from Firestone, and they did not charge me for the diagnostic since they couldn't fix the problem.

first time i ever went to Firestone and it was under 50 bucks for repairs. (actually i got an oil change, tire rotation, and alignment for free since i had a $28.96 coupon since i use their auto pass)

so i went to the car, turned it on and the service engine does not come up....

should i still take it in?

Did they happen to tell you the actual error code? The evaporator is typically an air conditioning part, but something doesnt seem right about that setting a code and triggering the light. There are also evap canisters to capture fuel/oil fumes, emissions type stuff. Thats where I am leaning. The actual code would tell us for sure.

BTW, almost everything that will set the check engine light is covered by the 5/50 emissions warranty.

DOH! Just noticed the milage. That stinks.
