Im 33, female, 90 dodge caravan or 00 Isuzi Amigo (depends on driving needs and mood) 17 yr experience.
My Biggest Irratition amoung OTHER drivers are:
Drivers yacking on a cell phone.
Drivers not using blinker signals.
Drivers not being curtisious during rush hour. (will give example)
What driving techniques do I use:
Defensive driving always. I am always on the lookout for bad drivers or drivers that look like they are not paying attention to the road. I highly fear being hit by a car. So Im always on the lookout for other people. I also am one of those people that like to keep at least 1 to 2 car lengths in between me and the car in front of me expecially on the freeway. I do not like bumper to bumper driving.
If I experience a situtation where someone is ovbiously demostrating road rage, i'll do one of two things. I'll either slow down to allow them at least 4 car lentghs in front of me or I'll speed up to get ahead of them. It depends on the sitatution. Sometimes the situation calls for me to be in front of the driver as the type of driving they are demostrating makes the possibility of the accident with me involved by being behind them. such as people who are constant slamming on thier breaks because they are tailgating someone else. In this case I'll do what i can to get safely past that driver and get way ahead of them. Its rare that i see this and use this manuver however i have on a few occassions.
Most of the time it usually requires me to slow down to allow the driver to get at least 4 cars ahead of me. that way if there is a wreck im not going to be in it.
I think the best way to have a mature attitude about driving is 1) be a safe driver and observe the rules. They are there for a reason. 2) always check your mirrors and make sure you have all three mirrors. If your vechicle has blind spots make sure your mirrors has the approperate small mirrors in the inside corners to allow for more visablity in your blind spots. 3) When passing, if you are not comfortable doing it, don't do it. 4) Always leave plenty early so you don't end up having to "race" to work because you are late. Allow time for possible delays, or pick another route.
That is about it. Not like you don't know all this.
In the 17 years I have been driving I am always learning new things. Not with the driving part itself but more as in defensive driving. Thier are countless of situations that one sees each day and you just have to look at the sitution and try and figure out what they are doing if they are doing what is not normal and then figure out how to get out of the sitution.
Today its expeically important to be observant about other drivers and not fall into that tunnel vision while driving. Today we have to deal with the cell phone jerks. They are my biggest irritation. I think it should be illegial in all states to be using cell phones while driving and force drivers to pull over to use the phone.
Edit: I forgot to give example of drivers not being cursity. What I mean by this is that during rush hour you are waiting in line because the line is long and you have to slow creep to get through the light. So many times I see drivers purposly going bumper to bumper to avoid not allowing a driver from a side street to join in the long line. I always make sure I allow at least 1 driver through to get in line. Its maddening when people do not do this. this really irrates me and when I do this I always get a friendly wave of thanks.
