When I bought my computer three years ago (I did consider building from scratch but didn't know a great deal about PC's then), I got the hard drive upgraded as I said that Dell were offering that size drive at the same price (which they were in fact).
I feel that as long as it's a fair and reasonable suggestion then there is nothing to lose in doing a bit of bargaining.

I have not done this....Yet, but when I got bought my PC from a show I had a friend along to help. I was very new to the field of computers and had told him what I wanted. They put it together for me but said that they could not include a 17" monitor in the deal. He said theat if they do not include it the deal is off. They then wanted to charge an extra $150. Again, no deal because we could go over to another stand and get it for around $100. They ended up including the monitor for free just to make him happy.
Yes I would consider this guy my best friend, and yes mortis it is sirhc

I ordered a bunch of sub box building materials from MCM Electronics. Very fast shipper, reliable, etc........except in this order I had a 12" metal speaker grill that needed installation clips. In the descrip. it said "use item # ******".....so I ordered those. WRONG ONES!!!!!!! Called them, wanted to return, it was under minimum return $$$ so I got credited.......$2....nice of them.
Sent them a not so pleasant email relating this. No reply.
Now I ordered the correct ones, $2 item. They don't tell shipping until you get it. I got it yesterday ---- $9 shipping for 4 plastic things and 4 wood screws! YEAH RIGHT.
I'm going to call them tomorrow and politely explain my situation and ask that they refund at least the shipping. IF the operator says they can't do that, I will politely ask to put me in to his/her supervisor.
I'm not paying $11 for a $2 item.

I'll try to haggle with anybody if the chance is there.
Big store, little store, whatever. And not just on comp equipment!
I love "open box / returned" merchandise. Always make an offer on that stuff, and never pay the asking price!! Every store bargains on that stuff if you find the right person, even K-Mart & Sears do!!
And on new-on-the-shelf, under some circumstances they'll deal... "So-and-so has it for $XX, can you beat it?"
Now, for comp stuff from smaller local stores I'll always ask for a "break", usually get it. They hate to see an in-store cash sale walk out the door!!

Anybody know how copper wire was invented? Two Jews fighting over a penny. Now don't get all mad at me. My very best friend, who is Jewish, told me this. Iv'e got to say I have nothing but respect for people that can haggle over prices of goods. I have never been able to do it. If I think the price is out of line I will go somewhere else. I don't like people to try to get me to reduce the price of my labor. Everybody deserves to make a living. If they are screwing you, go elsewhere. I just say, thank you, but I can't afford that.
