Interior Design/Lighting Tips!

I have a small, casual workspace just off of my kitchen (well, almost in my kitchen) that has something that really bothers me.

The whole home sort of has a southern/country/cozy feeling... Darker colors, darker floors, cedar panelled vaulted ceiling, lots of brick. The painted drywall you see in these photos is a rare sight in this house.

Anyway, something I hate about this area is that it has a generously sized chandelier, that I dislike for two reasons... First, it seems oddly out of place among all the wood and brick (not shown... :S), and I slam my head on it everytime I stand up from the workstation...

But, I have no idea what it could be replaced with that would fit in with the rest of the room & house in general.. It needs to be something that provides a generous amount of light, as well.

Any ideas?

Holy cow, I see what you mean. Even if you weren't banging your head on it, I'd suggest you replace it!!

If it were my house, I'd go with a lighted ceiling fan. You can get some with the wooden blades (expensive), or those that have plastic wood-grain type blades (cheaper and recommended). You'd still have the light you need and some extra air circulation as well if you ever want it.

You can pick up several different sizes, and models pretty darn cheap now a days. Walmart for instance has them, often for less than $30 (USD). I think the last one I got for my apartment was on sale for $15 and it looks and works great.
