Re: Best Buy, an eMachine and my friend ...

So, we go to Best Buy and browse around the computer department for a while looking at eMachines. He's like "WHOA these are SO CHEAP and they're the same thing that you built me, just half the price". The machine I came up with for him had nothing but quality stuff in it, and after you add the monitor, ram and video card to the eMachine, the costs are roughly the same... | If I'm reading you right, you've already built a machine based on the specs he agreed to?? And now he wants to shop around? This is a friend?? |

LOL, no, the computer hasn't been built already.... Consider it a "virtual build". I gathered all of the parts together on the internet & priced it up for him & printed it all out.
I don't mind spending my time shopping for parts... It's kind of fun. And that way I get to look for stuff for my future upgrades.
Thanks for looking out for me though..
I've known him for a VERY long time, and we have an agreement that if a part fails on him, he's gotta buy a new one. That is the risk he is going to take with having me build it for him.
I will show him this thread, and I think it'll be easy for him to decide that he doesn't want an eMachine anymore. |

I tried this once and it didn't work because of the mobo itself was small and all the slots sat back too far from the backend of the case where I wasn't able to plug in any pci cards correctly flush with back end of case. the standoff areas were in the totally wrong places for the mobo to fit in the right position. I tried this with a micro tower case and a standard tower case, same problem with both cases. Curious to know how you did this?

I have done it with several of our Emachines.
They are standard mico-ATX form, and any decent ATX case will have the mounting holes to accomodate it.
Of about 15 Emachines we have, I have done this with at least 4 or 5 of them with none of the problems you describe.
Of course, they are still garbage machines...but with better cases/PS |

i got my little eMachines eTower 633 ids 2 years ago. Everything! Monitor, keyboard, mouse, mouse, speakers, a DVD drive, just $500 without rebates! It has the quietest fan that i ever had on a PC, without the nasty overheat problems! Very reliable! Pretty stable......can run 15 programs without crashing! Never broke. LOVE IT! But that's not to mention that it didn't have any downsides.... a 15 day warranty and a missconfigured modem that i had to fix myself....because the warranty was already void. I upgraded it a little bit... a CD-RW burner and an ethernet jack....
I had typed this all on my eMachine and i know that i'm a minority at this forum....

One day he asked his friend, who also worked there, "What do I say if they ask what mobo the computer has?". His friend replied, "I don't know. Just say its an Abit". Well at this time my bro did not know anything about computers and heard his friend wrong and instead told customers that the mobos were "8bit" instead of Abit. He got no training what so ever from bestbuy. They have no idea whats in the computers except from what they can figure out from specs. They won't know more, and majority of the time will know less, than the average computer enthusiast.
