RIAA hit list; I think I'm on it
Hi,
I just read the RIAA hit list of the user whom they're planning to sue, and to my surprise, the last name gave me the jitters. Here's the list:

Look at the very last name: www.k_lite.tk_Kazaa_Lite@Kazaa. When I saw that I felt scared because I used that name!! But then I thought, hold on a minute, I checked my old files on my old computer (the one I was using Kazaa on at the time) and the last time it was used was on June 23, 2003. A week before RIAA started its murderous rampage! That name is the default name for every Kazaa user who doesn't choose to have a sign on name.
So my next question is, that last name can virtually be a lot of people. I hope it isn't me. They haven't subpoenaed Wal-Mart Connect yet (which is owned by AOL) which is the service I use, so I am little releaved.
But how common is Tyler, Jeff, and Jessica as sign on names? I tried signing on as one of those names before, and Kazaa let me. So, obviously, they're trying to scare us! They did me. By putting up common user names like this, how common is Jessica and Tyler?, they can scare users easily.
So , my question is why put up a default user name on that list? And your thoughts as to whether or not it could be me of course, lol.
thanks
-brad

Here's some random thoughts, maybe right, maybe Knot...
I think you've guessed a big part of this RIAA business. I'm very skeptical about their ability to effectively prosecute these users (I checked out KaZaA the other day, and there were about 250,000 people online). They cannot possibly do it, if those numbers are anything to go by, even if they only go after the HEAVIEST downloaders, that's STILL a lot.
Plus, what do they have to gain? The vast majority of file downloaders are kids and teenagers, (read: no $$$) not exactly a lucrative target for such a massive expenditure on RIAA attorneys.
IMO, this is sounding to me like the RIAA has taken a page from the IRS, by spreading lots of horror stories about the occasional poor schnook who lost everything because he cheated on his taxes....it's a campain of FEAR. The IRS actually has very limited powers at prosecuting anybody, and I think the RIAA has even less juice than that.
I say relax.
But, ehh, just to be on the safe side, go buy some (honest and legal) CD's. |

I thought it was pretty funny when I saw they were trying to prosecute the default Kazaa Lite username, considering how many people are using it |

I don't deal in Kazaa, but in imesh those names rn't real common. Most seem 2 use tags. I wouldn't b concerned thou, I b-lieve a lot of that is just scare tactics. That's a lot of people 2 take 2 court, & that costs money, u know. I think it's s**t that they r going so far as 2 try & scare people. Kind of inspiring, thou. Think I'll go download sum songs!!!!!!!!!!

If I do get sued...
If I do end up being that name, then I will say, "RIAA, I'm only 17 and I have a future. In fact, when you're dying on your deathbed, I will be that doctor caring for you. I will then look at the name of whom I caring for, and say, Oh jeez, that's the RIAA who sued me. Well, I won't help them because they sued me. I'm afraid if I use medical treatment on them, they'll find a way to sue me for mal-practice. So, no medical care for them!"
lol, that'd be sweet. Not that I'm blood lustful or anything..
But I seriously am 17 and have a good future! I'd be damned if they try to ruin it because I download a dozen or so songs! I'm studying Russian, Japanese, and Czech now and am making good progress! THey will not take that away from me!
K chyortoo RIAA! ( a popular cuss word in RUssian)
Riaa wa moo ooikute, warui da! (RIAA is already big and bad!)
Na shledanou (Goodbye in Czech, hey, I just started )
I can't say my bad words in French or German, coz I'd probably be asked to leave
THanks for your reply!

Well, good luck. Personally, I have issues with downloading off KaZaA (or other P2P services) as I consider it theft of goods, but I also recognize that I'm in the minority here.
But this overblown persecution jazz (on the part of the RIAA) is hardly warranted, IMO. They make me want to download a big load of stuff just to spite 'em! |

I am all for it.
Don't share and no problem. I fail to understand the issue here.
Don't give away stuff that does not belong to you.

What is a loopback address???
Ok, I've found some more information on the last name in the list. Here is what it said (just copied and pasted), but I doubt it makes any sense:
"They track a combination of username and IP address. For the default username, the IP address they have on record is 127.0.0.1. If that's not the address of your computer, you're safe!"
Um, hello, what is a loopback address and why would a normal user have it?? Please help me. I think this person didn't know what they were talking about.
