18 Fire and "rubber neckers"

I just don't understand people I guess!

The 18 Fire started yesterday aprox. 45 min. after I passed the start point on my way to work. When I got off work at 9p.m., I could look at Pilot Butte (between work and the fire) and see cars bumper to bumper winding up the Bute to look at the fire. On the way home (I live south of the fire), as I'm coming around the curve by Lava Butte, cars are parked along the highway and people are climbing up to the road to Lava Butte. (They weren't letting people drive up. )

According to tonights update, the fire is continuing to grow, but is starting to move slightly to the west. I live ~ 10 miles WSW of the fire, but I'm not worried (unless the wind really picks up out of the NE for the next couple days).

In the mean time, it's amazing the number of people that have to go out and get in the way, or try to find the best vantage point to watch the fire.

Dammit, why didn't my mother tell me about this fire? My mom lives right by horse butte. She is getting a call from me in the AM.

She knows I don't watch the news. and to find out from timo! I guess I should watch the news more often.

sharder, surpised you are now just figuring it about the butte. the butte is not only an vantage point of view. its were all the teenagers go to make out as well. Not to mention the scores of daily power walkers that go up and down that butte.

Oh I knew about the vantage point and the power walkers, but they've been keeping a pretty tight rein on the parties, while they've been redoing the street running past Pilot Butte. Lava Butte, I haven't been up yet! Between road closed for the winter, work, [FAD], etc., I haven't had time for anything other that taking the family to the High Desert Museum a couple a times.

BTW, anyone passing through Bend, I highly recommend stopping at the High Desert Museum!

Anybody remember that "Naked Gun" movie where the fireworks store catches fire, all these fireworks are going up, flying all over the place, and Leslie Neilson's character waving people away ("move along, folks, move along, nothing to see here!").

Human nature...

Well got the word, Mom and Dad are 4 miles from the fire. However she did tell me they are fairly safe for the time being since the fire is going the other direction. So lets hope it keeps going the direction where their are no homes.

She laughed when she found out how I found out.

Anyhooooo.............................
