I don't know about the DirectTV bit.. but I've known a few people with a TiVO and they LOVE them. Some add larger HD's in them so they can store more stuff

I've had the Hughes and I did research before I did it the first time. They have the best name it seems with customer satisfaction.
Go with the Hughes unless you want the free deal they have
(free recievers and programing for 2 months) Try em, they may be ok. If you don't like them then you can buy something else.

On the TiVo.... I know it works by getting program information through the phone line...... I am assuming though that it will still record without it correct?
I am looking at the 2 room setup with one TiVo reciever... and one normal reciever...
