Systems through the gums?

i went to the dentist yesterday for my checkup
he told me that my wisdom teeth are coming in straight, but that they should be taken out as soon as possible
however, they arent even grown yet, he would have to cut through the gums to get to them, and he also said that he thinks they would not come in straight, he is not even sure

geez.. i want to wait a while because they could come in right..at least wait till they are actually in - he just said they probably wouldnt come in straight because my jaw seems small, but on the xray it looked like they have enough room.. also it would cost about $300, with insurance (at least its better then $900 they are paying) what do you think?

Hey do it now, saves you even more money and pain when you are 40 and have to get them removed anyways....

When I had orthodontic work done a while back (perfect smile, now! ), the dentist extracted (cut out) pieces of my gum at the back. He didn't even really tell me he was doing it at the time. He put pincher-like things in my mouth, pinched a few times (pain felt like the gum was being lightly pinched) ... Next thing I know, they've extracted gum. I don't recall being numbed for that either, which is VERY wierd. And I don't remember feeling any pain at all until a few days later, and then it was just a dull, "fully bearable without medication" pain that lasted for maybe a day or two.

Anyway, I'd go ahead and have it done now. I can't imagine it would be any better, if not worse to have it done later on in life.

Kids Where's the wisdom in wisdom teeth?

Jacob...how old are you? How is your general health? Is your general dentist going to do the surgery herself (himself?) or are you being referred to an oral surgeon (specialist)?

I had mine out this past summer (age 17).

I would recommend getting them out now. Why wait? It would probably be worse later on.

All 4 came out and were impacted (still don't know what that means). Anyhew, the whole thing really wasn't that bad. Some pain afterwards but pills take care of that - take pain pills ontime!!!!!!!!!!! <-- always do that (not kidding - mind bending, uncontrollable, excrutiating pain if you don't in my expereince).

But ummmmmmm yeah......I'm sure you feel better now. Seriously, the procedure isn't bad whatsoever as long as you have gas which is fun!!!! I'd say the "worst" part (basically what I described above) is the first 3 hours with the blood......just stick in a movie like I did (Ferris Buelers Day Off) and relax. Ice is really nice too.

Don't worry about it.

One possible factor that has not been mentioned is the state of development of the teeth. They may not have completed formation of their roots, a possible plus in their removal.

Speaking strictly as a non-professional, it sounds reasonable to me to consider removal at this time. I had mine done by an oral surgeon, a move I recommend.

Of course, your mileage may vary, and I could be wrong.

(Good luck.)

Lot of good advice here, and a very good point made by Crazyray. Wait till they are fully formed and the extraction can be harder and more painful!

Had mine removed when I was around 22 yrs old at an oral surgeon. Definitely think the oral surgeon is the way to go.

Having to go through the gums to get to them is not a bad deal and entails very little pain. They also fully heal very quickly.

In my case, mine were fully formed and I had to have my jaw broken slightly to get them out (hammer and chisel used to break away part of the jaw bone to get the roots out fully). At least the IV of valium made it so that I couldn't feel anything and didn't give a rats butt about it anyway.

If you have a small mouth or jaw, your dentist advice is probably correct in that they won't continue to come in straight, and could cause problems with the fully formed teeth you already have.

If you are concerned about the procedure, don't be. You can always get a second opinion too.

Make sure to follow the after removal instructions to the letter though so you don't develop complications.

Wow... Some of these stories make me realize how lucky I am!

Thanks to my mom, I have no wisdom teeth - and won't be getting any!

I had all four of mine taken out just a while ago maybe 2, 3 months.
I had the bottoms ones coming in tilting toward the front and it was pushing them together. The two little ones in the front are pushed out of alignment just a little, thats the only thing thats wrong with my teeth now.
Oh yeah they took the tops ones out because he said that with out the bottoms ones there they would drop down to far or something.
Any its not that bad luckly I had the computer next to my bed, So I had something to do.
