Tech Awash In Coffee...BLUB!!

As some of you know, I am currently staying with my cousin Tom and his g/f Cendy.

They are delightful people, and we get along fabulously--I'm really lucky to be here--but there's this one thing (isn't there always?)...

These guys are MAJOR coffee fiends...I'm talking about, they grind their own beans, brew it to almost radioactive levels, and drink it all day, even up to the time they go to bed! I canNOT imagine how they can possibly sleep, but I guess they do.

When they get home from work, I learned they like to make a pot, so I started making one about 5:00, so it would be waiting for them when they walked in the door...but now...I dunno.

Have you ever been around Meth users (or small birds)? This is kinda how they are. Cendi will routinely go off on a rant (the funny kind, thankfully) which can go on for an hour or two... and Tom likes to sing along with the radio...loudly and constantly. Neither of them is able to sit still thru dinner, even though they chide each other about it! Weird!

I've started making comments like, "hey guys, it's time to slow down on the Caffeine, don't you think?"

Neither drinks alcohol, so I don't, either. (We all smoke like smokestacks, sorry to say.) But I think this coffee intake is abnormal and is gonna do them harm. I like coffee, 2 or 3 cups a day, and never after 5 pm (it WILL keep me from sleeping), but I've never seen anything like these guys, and I am a bit concerned.

They are both very lovable and charming (not to mention generous) people, so there's balance socially, and Lord knows, I can get along with almost anybody. (Not to mention, they get along fine with me, if you can imagine...)

What I'm on about is, I do think there's a red flag being waved here, as regards their health. They are in their 40's (he's younger) and are in general good health...but for how long?

Anybody can comment intelligently on this? (P.S., this started out as a PM to Dr.Mickwish, and turned into this...)

They'll probably get splitting headaches from caffeine withdrawal.

Seriously, though: caffeine is one of the great wonder drugs. It's essentially impossible to overdose on it (the lethal dose is more than 100 times the effective dose), and, other than addiction (and it is addictive), has few side effects. It's not carcinogenic, doesn't cause heart disease or brain damage, and the amounts it would take to damage your kidneys are in the range of 40-50 cups a day over many years.

Its performance-enhancing qualities would cause it to be banned from all athletic competitions if it weren't so socially acceptable (and almost universally used, except by Mormons and some especially prunefaced Fundamentalists).

Its effects on the bystander, though, can be negative, as you've discovered...

There's an interesting book on the subject.

One problem that is common with heavy coffee drinkers are stomach problems

Coffee is a bit harsh

Oh and sometimes (maybe a few times a month) on my weekends I'll get bored around midnight and run to the gas station for 20oz cup of coffee
I'm always awake until 4am anyways *shrug*
One of the perks of working swings

I can always tell decaf from regular coffee, so that might not be the best way to go about it.

First be honest, ask them if they miight want some decaff instead of regular, or tell them that tomorrow you will make a cup of decaff and see what happens.

NEVER blindside a friend(or cousin, his mate) or anyone who you care for.

Huh! Well good, then. I was thinking along the carcinogen lines, frankly. Thanks, Theo!

Especially not with...
1. COFFEE..
Knot, think of it like a smoker. Sneak in a ultra light to a normal filter.. you'd go crazy!

2. Somebody currently housing you Wait till you move out then try those tricks

Hmmm...yeah, that's good advice. Thanks, Vern, I'll do it that way.
