dvd gift recommendation

people,

i need some DVD recommendations for a birthday present. i'm after, well, not sure! maybe some 'collections', 'trilogy', something thats not too costly, but can be sorta classified as a 'collectable'.

did a quick search in amazon for 'collections'...these are the ones i kinda liked. but i need MORE options..

1> The Chaplin Collection, Vol. 1 (Modern Times / The Great Dictator / The Gold Rush / Limelight)
2> Akira Kurosawa - 4 Samurai Classics (Seven Samurai / The Hidden Fortress / Yojimbo / Sanjuro) - Criterion Collection
3> The Sherlock Holmes Feature Film Collection
4> Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy (Strictly Ballroom / Romeo + Juliet / Moulin Rouge)

u might have noticed that the 'Godfather trilogy', or the 'Stanley Kubrick Collection' is missing. so yeah, not too violent, or arthouse stuff. i'd like some 'close to mainstream' movie recommendations.

thanks everyone
nishark

Some ones too look at:

Star Wars Trilogy (should be on DVD)
The Twilight Zone -Collection (the Rod Serling ones of course, there are different collections)
Mystery Science Theatre 3000 Collection (there are 3 volumes)
James Bond 007 Special Edition DVD Collection (this one is great)

The person you're giving this too doesn't happen to be into anie, does s/he?

thanks redwolf

anime u mean?
nope, she isnt into anime

if she was, i'd have just given her 'waking life' + 'animatrix'!

she doesnt like starwars and is not a big fan of james bond she doesnt like matrix, LOTR, sci-fi stuff like that. so i dont have a lot of options to play with

hence the need for help

Aww...that's about 95% of DVD collections right there

Mystery Science is SCI-FI, but it's the funniest thing you'll see this side of SNL. Reminds me...

While not necessarily "collections," I gave my wife these four DVDs:

Bee Gees - One Night Only

Bee Gees - Live By Request

Earth, Wind, & Fire - Live

Earth, Wind, & Fire - Live By Request

She won't stop playing them. My kids "hate" me for it.

I have to admit that they are well worth viewing.

Oh, I thought snl was TV.

How about some old Shirley temple movies, or there was a series of movies in 30's 40's called 'The Thin Man. Subtle comedy mystery detective stuff.

Abbot and costello? Three stooges?

You are not giving us much info on the parameters here.
