My first was a copy of a Gibson Hummingbird...made in Japan somewhere. Looked just like one, but could never get the action right on it. Always had the buzziest strings....but alas, I still have it. One of the many things that are cluttering up my house!

I really like the sound and quality of Ovation acoustics, you can get one under 300$---

Um . . . I would deffinately go with Epiphone or (if you can afford it) Martin.

I just learned to play last year, but for me, it was incredibly easy to pick up. It just kinda felt natural, ya know? However, beware of your fingers! After a little while of heavy duty practice, they will be quite beat up! -Jon

P.S. ya like my avatar?

I would learn on an electric because they are, as a rule easier on the fingers, and the price is not bad either. You can always upgrade later. Fender has a great beginer pack here also browse around, but this is a good deal right now.

i've been playing acoustic guitar for 10 yrs. but not full time. I do it for relaxation. i both played rhythm and plucking. i am inspired with America's TinMan and Ventura Highway (you heard it?)

anyways, I learned to play the basics for about 2 months. no formal tutorial schools. just me and my friends and some self-studying. My fingers got really hurt at first.

my advice is pure dedication and determination.

Good luck.

dax

p.s. forgot to mention, I almost failed my 3rd quarter subjects

wel i have been playing guitar for about 6 years now and i would say all you need to do is learn what power chords are at first. really really simple stuff! But as far as buying a guitar I would do the same that I did buy an acoustic (ovations are my favorite) they go from anywhere around 200-1000 dollars but if you got one at 200 dollars you would love it. Then after awhile if you like it you can get into the good stuff including a peavey 5150 with a gibson sg or anything.. have fun and good luck!

flash4master..................I didn`t bother reading all of the responses so ignore me if this was mentioned. DON`T but a guitar for the name or because of the name. You need to go to your local store and literally get a hands on feel for what fits your hand and body. You want a guitar that has a neck that your fingers can reach across with out too much strain( there will be a little at first), it has to have decent action...meaning there isn`t too much space between the neck/fingerboard and the strings...too much and it`s a pain to play, too little and it may buzz when playing. There`s lots of little tips but basically get what feels right to you even if it doesn`t come with a name. Gary

The relavance of this I dont know because this thread has been here awhile but I will soon be buying a Samick reissue of a 60 something studio Les Paul. I must say that this is ome of the sweetest guitars that I have ever touched... I was Fender bound until I found this guitar.

Link

The one i am getting is like that but it has the standard paul headstock and tuners and it is black with a white pick guard. They are great guitars as far as I am concerned and they arent too pricey
