i started playing about 2 years ago. i biught a cheap Squire guitar cause i didnt want to drop a load on a good expensive guitar w/o knowing if i would stick to it. well i have and love every minute of it. i am not very good but it is a really big stress reliever for me.

my suggestion is to take some lessons at first to get some plan as how to play and how to practice. you dont want ot start bad habbits. i took lessons for the 1st six months to get the basics. since then i been progresing pretty well. i also would suggest to learn how to read TAB right off the bat. there are a ton of sites online that have online lessons

Fender
Zentao online lessons
Guitar.com

plus a whole lot more. the mel bay books are good also. you might want to go over to Musicdispatch and look for some instructional books.

hope this helps

I would get the Ephiphone over the Johnson. Ephiphone is made by Gibson

though an acoustic as a starter will make you a 100% better a player.. i'd say get an electric setup, it's easier to play which builds confidence, nothing fancy either. just go to any pawn shop and get something that you like, buy new strings. (super slinky's of course) !! plugged in will keep your interest until you are past playing smoke on the water and the first couple chords of stairway. IMHO

Epiphone is NICE, excellent choices - gibson or epiphone

But with electric, he'll have to buy an amp. Ok, maybe not HAVE to but in order to sound ANYwhere good with ANY sort of loudness he will have to

Amps are fun

My first guitar was an electric and I learned on it without an amp for sometime.. you just have to do it when it quiet in the house so you can hear what you're playing.

Minor correction...

Ephiphone is owned by Gibson not made by Gibson (which is itself owned by Norlin Industries).
Gibson owns the rights to Ephiphone but they are not made in the Gibson factory.
They are still fine guitars nonetheless and would be a good choice.

flash4master, either an Epiphone or a Yamaha would make excellent first instruments, andif you have the choice, go with the yamaha. I've recommended them to several friends, played them after they've gotten them, and they're very satisfactory instruments and will carry you a long way.

My first serious acoustic was a Yamaha, which got stolen whilst loading out after a gig. 25 years later, I'm still looking for that guitar, it sounded that good. These days, for a few bucks more, you can get an Epi, or Yamaha with built-in pickup and electronics and get loud when the time comes

I'd have to warn you off the current crop of Deans. I played my way through almost the entile line recently and didn't find a one that sounded like anything more than a crappy plywood box, cosmetics notwithstanding.

The Ernie Ball books are very good and the Mel Bay books are excellent. I have a bias toward Mel here as I knew that crusty old coot for over 40 years

My first guitar was some no name acoustic that my late grandfather gave to me. I learned to play by getting tab from harmony central of songs that I knew from my cds. I have since switched to playing bass though.
