About comments on my posts

I often don't reply to comments on my posts, especially when the posts are either links or quotations that I think speak pretty much for themselves. If the comments are about factual issues, or about interpretation of the quotes, they'll usually get a response. If the comment is a result of misreading or failing to read the citation, I may point that out.

If the comments are merely personal and don't add anything to the debate, such as
Quote:
You two should form your own party and run for the presidency. I'm sure you'd do a much better job...
or
Quote:
Do you honestly believe what you just wrote, Theo, or is this just more propaganda?
or
Quote:
He's a fairly good fellow too, just doesn't understand what he's talking about in this situation
a response isn't called for.

I often read letters to the New York Times Book Review or the New York Review of Books where and author responds to a bad review. It's almost always a mistake; sometimes it's embarrassing.

If I'm truly offended and incensed by a personal insult, I may respond; but I'm usually angry with myself later, because I realize too late that it should have been handled with a PM.

Basically, I'm a hotheaded guy. The lovely thing about TechIMO is that a discussion format where you have to write everything gives you (at least in principle) time to cool off and revise. As a consequence, I probably come off as a calmer and more laid-back person than I really am.

But I really am a Liberal, and you can't get a rise out of me by using the word...

Self control and moderation is the difference between an ordinary person with an opinion and an extremist. Members that continually post controversial and objectional content will also be held accountable for their contribution when/if flames errupt in sensitive topics such as race, religion, politics, etc.

All members are expected to post in a manner that's RESPECTFUL of the opinions of others.

Quote:
One of our policies has always been to treat each other with respect and dignity, and we do not allow obscene language. These policies for conduct are our top concern and will be enforced. No one will be allowed to disrespect, intimidate, bully, "flame" or otherwise degrade or post inflammatory remarks about or to another member for any reason.- TechIMO FAQ

Saying that one doesn't know what he's talking about is more or less saying that the person is grossly misinformed; that's not a flame. If i were to call someone a jerk or idiot, then that would be entirely different. Calling someone wrong isn't disrespectful, it's necessary in the world we live in.

First off, let me point out that I think it's great your a liberal.......not trying to be sarcastic in any way. You have deep beliefs and I respect that. I also don't ALWAYS disagree with you either. Several of your other posts were very fun and informative to read.

However you DO post ALOT of controversial political posts, and some of these border on the verge of flaimbait (See titles and comments below)-- imho of course. Your comments are very slanted to the left (your right ~~ pun sort of intended ) . However the fact you never seem to respond to others comments......to either discuss things or try to see another viewpoint is insulting to some ....... post and run. ... if you get my drift. It's not a big leap to try to understand that some people get a little irritated by that. I'm not trying to be insulting, or anything like that...... I'm simply trying to get you to see how your posts may look to others with differing opions. (Me for one). SEE BELOW.........

I had no intention to belittle you in this post, and if I've offended you I apologize..... I have nothing against you personally. I just wanted you to see the grass is the same color from this side of the fence too.

thread crapping is one thing, but what about forum crapping? need there be 50 different neohippie rants crowding the board, all saying pretty much the same thing?

I enjoy your posts Theo not only because I agree with a lot of your posts but also because your threads often give most people an opportunity to exchange ideas.

I'm a hot-headed person too, and I think it shows in many of my posts. But hey, you only live once...
