...and so on.
That is how smilies should be done in emails. In fact those examples and the hundreds like them, are the only real Smilies. The cute little happy face graphics that you see at this and other forums are not smilies at all. They are simply cute little graphics intended for use on the graphic oriented WWW, and not for use in emails.
Why do I say that? Because an email should consist of only three things:
1. text
2. Text
3.
TEXT
IOW, no images in emails. It's exactly for this reason that the original Smilies were invented. If your email needs something more than text, then attach it.
Unfortunately, thanks to MS and their "we make the rules so just shut-up" attitude, most people seem to think it's perfectly alright to send and receive HTML formatted emails. And that's bad enough, but embedded graphics as well? That's just rude in my book. It's not alright to send HTML formatted emails.
You should always assume emails you send are going to be viewed with a text only email client. 1. Because that very well may be the case, and 2. because lots of people, like me, configure their email app to not accept incoming html.
Sorry for the mini-rant. This is just one (of my many) pet peeves.
