Kids Broken Ankle?

Who has had a broken ankle before? I was fighting in karate class tonight and my right ankle rolled to the outside. I felt two pops and then extreme pain for a minute or so. I got up and continued to fight. After a few minutes the pain was too much to continue. So I sat down and took my foot gear off....and my right ankle was the size of a grapefruit. I only weigh 160lbs, so that is huge. Now it has began to darken into a nice shade of blue/purple. What do you guys think? Broke or not? I've never had a broken anything other than a finger.

Probably the ligaments went pop.

A bit of RICE - rest, ice, compression and elevation, then off to the doc tomorrow to have an X-ray. Stay off it until then, to avoid chipping anything if you did snap a bone (which I doubt, though).

Hope it don't take too long to settle down.

Cheers
Mick

Technically yes but you'll probably need a brace to prevent the foot from moving. A friend of mine ripped some ligaments in his leg playing soccer and he needed to wear a very strong leg brace. It restricted almost all movement in his knee joint.

Try to avoid all movement of the foot. I'm not saying to put a tensor around it since I really don't know if that would be good or bad; I'm just saying try to keep it still.

If you pick your foot up off of the floor does the bottom of your foot stay parallel to the floor or does it turn inboard?

Oh yea, I remember those pops Mine became the size of a baseball, but hey, I'm a girl
Major sprain. Advil for swelling and ice, I've always wrapped mine.
do you wrap em mick?
If it's really bad (and it sounds like it) you may want to ask your doctor about an air cast. Comfy and stability is what they give. Fingers swears by them..

Screw this air cast noise... just eat yer wheaties foo =)

And on a more serious note... Do go to see a doc. Tore a couple of ligaments in my thumb once and put off going to the doc because "it will get better." Month and a half later I still couldn't hold a pencil. All in all I wound up spending a lot more time in pain trying to heal.

Always get ice on those sorts of injuries asap and for as long as possible. Makes a big difference in healing and overall comfort.

Certainly go to your doctor to have it looked at.

About three years ago at work on Christmas Eve I fell down five steps and hurt my ankle. It didn't swell up as much as yours but it turned blue/black and I had to rest it all over the holiday. It completely cleared up after a week or so. Then last October I fell off a ladder at work and although the ankle didn't discolour it did swell up, but not that much. It only started to hurt a week or so later, which was strange, and it did hurt I can tell you. Both occasions it was a bruising to the bone, the latter incident took several weeks to clear up completely.

Dr would be a good idea---
Ive got a pal with 35 years of karate experience---he could easily knock my head off before I knew what happened...

Since im usually available---im his taxi after surgery
broken toes
broken feet
elbo surgery twice
knee surgery 4 times
neck surgery 2 times
broken ribs 3 times
nose
broken fingers---fixes them his self nowadays
jaw knocked almost off his face
Im sure im missing something---
He still competes today and loves it, has a demeanor that would lead you to think he is friendly and harmless---id hate to be on the receiving end if he was pissed...

Consult a Dr...
