car people.... ticking noise

To anyone who knows much about cars, recently I heard a ticking sound coming from the passenger side valve cover, kind of near the PCV valve... (I've pinpointed it).
It's a 1997 V-6 Mustang.

Yesterday & today it just started getting louder... After the car gets warm, it quiets down. Do you think it's something to worry about?
I can't hear it from INSIDE the car, only when outside of it.

The car runs fine otherwise, it's just this dang ticking that's bugging me.

Sounds like either a lifter going bad, or you may need a new PCV valve. I think you should check that oil a little more often than that. At least once a week. Go do it right now!! LOL

heh heh... yeah, i need to take care of it. With moving into a new house, working full time & planning a wedding, I don't have much time to baby my car any more...

She really needs an oil change too. I think it's been almost 4,000 miles... Which before it was STRICTLY every 3,000 miles regardless.

Well, I hope the lifter is covered under the powertrain warranty if that ends up being the case.
But I'll check the oil again and definately change it, as well as getting a new PCV valve... those are easy.

It does sound like a lifter, some engines start ticking after a while.Get it checked asap the longer it's like that the more it's gonna cost to fix it.

it's either that, or the venerable exhaust tick. As the manifold heats up, it seals itself...

Here's the test ( cause I've got a ticking lifter )...

Does the noise go away under load?

There are products that may "unstick" a gummed up lifter---Rislone, Marvel Mystery Oil, Stp, Motor Honey---these are 40+ year old formulas, im sure there even better ones now...

hmm... thanks for the replies.

I can't really tell when I'm driving whether or not it goes away when I give it some gas. But I had it sitting in park in my driveway while revving it & it was still there.. Didn't get much quieter & didn't get louder either.

Man... I hope if it is a lifter problem that it won't be too expensive to fix...

Well, a V6 Mustang lifter might be a chore to replace, but the cost of the lifter will be Nil....they are about 10 bucks a piece on average.

Problem is, you need to remove the intake manifold in most cases to get to it, which means you will also have to buy the necessary gaskets to go along with that lifter replacement. ( if you can, replace all the lifters and save yourself some trouble ).
