How do you guys know everything???

Do you all have degrees in computers or something. If you do let me know do I don't feel completely worthless. If you didn't go to school for computers then where/how did you learn what you know. Can you give me some reccomendations for websites, mags, books, anything really. I really got into my computers class this years and I want to learn more.

thanks.

I second that.

I have been using a windows based machine since I was 10. I didn't really start getting into it until I discovered the joy that is the greatest game of all time half-life. I find computers are ussually designed with comman sense in mind so just think like " if i was doing this what would i do?"

And as for a degree in computers, i only have a cert 3 in information technology systems from TAFE. Which really couldn't get me a tech job. At the moment i'm studying a bachelor in interactive entertainment. Majoring in animation.

Its not a single entity type of knowledge, more of a collective knowledge.. like The Borg.

But I'd make sure I get second opinions on some of the info you get here, I have seen some people give some REALLY bad info and suggestions.

Same here. I started by doing Compaq warranty calls in 1995 (back when we had a contract with them). I was Compaq certified at my companys training center. I have also worked on print servers since 1994.

It's because we have experience screwing things up "D'oh"!

And then fixing them, usually by trying ideas gleaned from fellow Techimo members.

If everything ran perfectly all of the time, we wouldn't learn a thing. The newer OS's are pretty stable, but most of us started with win 3.1, win95, win 98. with no shortage of glitches. The newer ones like XP, win 2K are getting pretty boring since they don't break too easily, plus the aftermarket driver writers are getting better.

Like the saying, "Cadillac drivers make lousy mechanics!"

I've been playing with computers since the commodore 64 days and learned how to do practically everything on computers including programming and repairs (here you have to solder). I was the c64 users' favorite repairman. Going from commodore to ibm was an experience. Been ibm since. Now I'm everybody's favorite repairman. <sigh>

I've been using computers since the late 80's (VIC-20, Commodore 64, PCs, early Mac's even an Amiga once)

I've got about 15 years of experience going. Plus I have a degree in computer programming, which I don't use but...
