Strom dies at 100

Well, the Senator that has served longer than any that I know has died at age 100.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/...bit/index.html

He was controversial in many ways, but his death is a sad one for the US, and especially for South Carolina who he has served for over 47 years.

What a mixed bag Senator Thurmond was...

He was a bigot, he actively campaigned for segregation between the whites and the blacks...

But he also campaigned for the literal view of our Constitution...

What will history make of this guy?

One thing is for sure, he sure made a dent in the American political scene.

R.I.P.

I didn't think much of his slanted and bigoted stance.

But now that he is gone, may his soul rest in peace.

The senate just won't be the senate without him around

Say what you will about the 40s, but realize that the whole US was pretty screwed up back then, not just a few people. He did eventually change his ways, and I highly doubt Lott was refering to the segregationalist past of Thurmond. That's all in the past now...

My relatives in South Carolina (that's like 3/4th my family) all liked and respected him. He made quite an impact on the senate. History will surely not forget him as one of the great leaders.

That's till pretty classless, guys. If you don't want to say anything bad about the dead, then why did you post something bad? All you are doing is posting a very short and self-contained lie. Pretty crappy. If Bill Clinton died, I'd not post. I wouldn't gloat like you are doing about a man's death. That is lower than low, even for you.

daveleau, you were involved in earlier threads about Thurmond, as I recall. You knew there were plenty of people here who had things to say. He was hardly an uncontroversial figure, as you point out.

If you were putting out a call for eulogies, you should have said so. Don't be a hypocrite; the rest of us are being as restrained as could be imagined, under the circumstances.

I think he did not achieve anything memorable in his long long life except the distinction of serving most number of terms in the Senate and a long long filibuster against Civil Rights if my recollection is accurate.

A very unremarkable career.
